Can't Stop, Won't Stop, Chapter One

Necropolis: The Bronx and the Politics of Abandonment
by: Laura and Laura

This chapter set the scene for the establishment of hip-hop as a social movement. Hip-hop came about as a result of the poor working and living conditions, especially in the Bronx. The unrest caused by the shifting power of the Black Power movement then local gangs worked first to improve the city but then lead to its ruin. Political authorities had no interest in reviving the city; they saw the area as a lost cause and thought that the best course of action would be to level the entire community. The chapter did not give any specific information about hip-hop rather it served to set the cultural scene in which the dance style would develop. The deplorable social conditions inspired the advent of hip-hop.
